Growing up in a military family with parents who loved God and were involved in the church, Kris experienced a stable and loving upbringing full of people who pointed him to Christ. Born in Okinawa, Japan, his family eventually moved to Alaska. In a small baptist church, Kris realized his need for a Savior at the age of 11.
Kris is passionate about changing the lives of students through his leadership of Middle School Fellowship Student Ministries and Family Ministries.
During his middle and high school years, the reality of being a follower of Christ hit him as he struggled to find his place in the crowd. He was involved with his youth group but didn’t take his faith seriously until he was forced to deal with the diagnosis of his father’s brain cancer. In the midst of uncertainty and confusion with his father’s illness, Kris met Jen his junior year at Wasilla High School. Although she was two years younger, Kris pursued a relationship with Jen that God would use to help carry him through the toughest time of his life, teaching them both about the importance of a life sold out to Christ. With the end of his senior year came the death of his father. At the moment of saying his last goodbye, Kris recognized that he had lost a wealth of godly wisdom and that the heritage his father had tried to instill was no longer available. This was the turning point for Kris, where God gave him the motto for the rest of his life: “I want to give all that I know of myself to all that I know of God.” Kris knew that a fully-devoted life was something he wanted to share with Jen, so he took her as his bride in 1996. The Howells began their journey together with a 5000-mile road trip to Toccoa Falls College in northeast Georgia. God used the time at Toccoa as a preparation for a life of ministry. Kris graduated with a degree in Christian Education, giving him a broad scope, full of possibilities, which would allow him to experience all kinds of ministry opportunities.
His first ministry experience began in Missouri where Kris directed a summer camp at a large baptist church. God then led the Howells to a rural town to serve with Youth Life for the next year. During that time they really began to process their gifts and abilities. As a team, Kris and Jen knew that they were meant to serve by discipling students. Ironically, Kris never thought he would return to Alaska (he had thawed out and was enjoying warm southern temps), but God clearly called them back as the Youth Pastor of Wasilla Bible Church. They served there for five incredible years before coming to Fellowship Bible Church in December of 2007.
While Kris and Jen have devoted themselves to serving God through a lifestyle of ministry, they also believe that their family comes first and is their most valuable ministry tool. Kris and Jen are blessed with three sons, Zachary, Keaton, and Peyton. To bring balance to the household, the Howells adopted a daughter from South Korea; Molly arrived in October, 2008.
